President's Corner July 2011

It’s also just past the halfway point of the calendar year, finding me in a little bit of a review mode.  The past six months have had a priority on getting organized: improving the website, documenting procedures, re-writing our mission statement, working on an elevator pitch, gathering the board’s organizational materials, updating our marketing brochures, renewing our non-profit status, delineating chapter benefits from URISA Int’l, starting this editorial column as a peek into what we’re up to, and more.

Something that I haven’t addressed until now is revenue: we always need to continue to bring in money in order to continue to offer scholarships and subsidize top-quality events.  Our biggest revenue source has traditionally been the beloved regional GIS in the Rockies conference, which has been around for decades.  As one of the sponsoring societies, Rocky Mountain URISA contributes seed money each year to help put on this conference.  The profits aren’t what they used to be, but Rocky Mountain URISA remains committed to funding this worthwhile endeavor.  Instead of trying to find a new major revenue source, it should be enough for us to more carefully prepare a budget each year, and forecast workshop revenues.  And, to encourage all of you and your co-workers to attend GIS in the Rockies, of course.

GIS in the Rockies has been doing a great job to stay strong and relevant, keeping flexible to find ways to keep things interesting and appealing.  It’s still the best way for many geospatial professionals to discover new technologies and trends, and to see what exciting things our peers have been working on.  RM-URISA believes it’s worth all of our support; our geospatial community in the Rocky Mountain region will be the better for it.

Hope to see you there,
John W. Shramek
